China's State Council has set up a National Energy Commission to improve the coordination of strategic energy policy-making, the State Council announced January 27. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Li Keqiang will lead the committee as director and deputy director respectively.
The committee will take charge of drafting strategies for national energy development, examining emerging energy security and development issues, and coordinating international energy cooperation, the State Council said.
Set up in 2008, China's National Energy Administration lacks the power to carry out some of its assigned tasks as responsibility for the energy sector is spread among a number of departments.
